광학 속성과 전기적 속성이 우수한 비정질 열가소성 중합체이며 대체로 광학 및 전기 부문에서 사용된다. 강도, 강성도, 내충격성이 높고, 최고 130°C까지 내열성을 보이지만, 긁힘에 민감하다. 따라서 PC는 마멸에 노출되는 응용 부문의 경우 하드코트 플라즈마 증착 또는 플라즈마 활성화에 기초한 긁힘 방지 습식 코팅을 이용해 긁힘 방지층으로 보호해야 한다.

Amorphous thermoplastic polymer featuring good optical and electrical properties, therefore largely used in optical and electrical applications. High strength, stiffness and impact resistance, heat resistant up to at least 130°C, but scratch sensitive. Hence, PC has to be protected with scratch-resistant layers for applications under abrasion, e. g. by hardcoat plasma deposition or by coating with scratch resistant wet coating upon plasma activation.
