폴리실록산. 대체로 폴리(디메틸실록산)이며 오일 또는 그리스에서 널리 사용된다. 양생 가능한 실리콘은 밀봉제 등에 사용된다. 실리콘은 표면 에너지가 매우 낮아(약 20 mN/m) 대다수의 다른 표면에 잘 습윤되지만 대다수 다른 액체가 스며들지 않는다. 따라서 실리콘의 흔적조차 대다수 코팅 공정에서 방해가 된다. 실리콘이 포함된 표면은 특수 플라즈마 방법을 이용해 세정할 수 있다.

Polysiloxane, mostly poly(dimethylsiloxane), having found widespread application as oil or grease. Curable silicones are used e. g. in sealings. Silcones feature a very low surface energy (about 20 mN/m), therefore wetting well most other surfaces but not being wetted by most other liquids. Hence, even traces of silicones disturb most coating processes. The cleaning of surfaces containing silicones is feasible by special plasma methods.
