순수 스퍼터 공정에서는 아르곤이 공정 가스로 자주 사용된다.
스퍼터링에 의한 플라즈마 세정은 "마이크로 샌드블라스팅"이라고도 한다.
또한, 스퍼터링은 박막 기술에서 원하는 물질(소위 대상)의 시료를 이용한 충격에 의해 유한 조성을 갖는 기상을 생성하기 위한 방법으로 사용된다.
