PE에는 접착제의 결합제 부착을 위한 기능기가 전혀 없기 때문에, 미처리 PE 표면은 일반적 접착제로 접합할 수 없다. 그러나 특히 산소를 이용한 플라즈마 처리는 PE 표면에 기능기(키톤기 및 카르복실레이토기 등)가 생성되는 것을 가능하게 하여 대다수 접착제와 안정적으로 접합되게 한다.

As PE lacks any functional group for the attachment of an adhesive’s binder, untreated PE surfaces can not be joined by usual adhesives. However, a plasma treatment, in particular with oxygen, allows the generation of functional groups (e. g. keto and carboxylato groups) on the PE surface, thus providing a stable connection with most adhesives.
