육불화황(SF6)은 정상적 조건에서 언제나 불활성 가스이다.
그러나 플라즈마에서 공정 가스로 사용되면 SF6은 고반응성 불소 원자와 불화황 래디칼을 생성한다.
따라서 SF6은 가장 중요한 플라즈마 공정 가스 가운데 하나이다(테트라플루오로메탄 참조).

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is an absolutely inert gas under normal conditions. However, when applied as process gas in a plasma, SF6 generates highly reactive fluorine atoms and sulfur fluoride radicals. Hence, SF6 constitutes one of the most aggressive plasma process gases (see tetrafluoromethane).
