산은 수소 양이온(양자)를 다른 화합물(브뢴스테드의 정의)에 빼앗길 수 있는 화합물이다. 중성 산은 중성 염기와 반응해 염분을 형성한다. 산성 반응은 몇 가지 지시 염료로 쉽게 알 수 있다.
